The catastrophic acts of terrorism by Hamas that began on 7 October are truly shocking. The UK stands with Israel as it seeks to defend itself against these atrocities and we support the Palestinian people – because they’re victims of Hamas too.
I believe we also have a responsibility to call these acts what they are, terrorism. Along with my colleagues who have had Cabinet responsibility for media policy, I have signed a letter to the Director General of BBC asking for an urgent reassessment on BBC’s approach to describe Hamas as “militants” and “fighters”, rather than terrorists in the wake of the group’s attack on Israel. You can read the full letter below.
This is a distressing and worrying time for many in our communities and across the world. There must be zero tolerance of any increase in antisemitism or islamophobia. Locally, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight Constabulary is monitoring all planned protests and are working in partnership with the Police and Crime Commissioner, County and Borough Councils as well as community partners to collectively extend a helping hand and provide the necessary support to those in need.
