Local MP Maria Miller recently visited the refuge in Basingstoke for women and their children escaping domestic abuse. The refuge is run by the charity Stop Domestic Abuse, which secured the Hampshire County Council contract to deliver domestic abuse support services across Hampshire from April 2019.
Maria met the CEO of Stop Domestic Abuse, Claire Lambon, and members of the staff team at the Basingstoke refuge, and heard about the help they offer to victims of domestic abuse by providing a place of safety and help to begin to rebuild their lives.
The Basingstoke refuge has space for 17 women and their children, and Maria was given a tour of the accommodation and facilities. They also run group work programmes for adults, children and young people, and offer specialist Diversity and Inclusion support.
Maria said: “I was pleased to have the opportunity to visit the women’s refuge in Basingstoke again, and to be able to talk with Claire and the team in Basingstoke. The support they give to women and their children is absolutely invaluable, and I was impressed by the quality of the accommodation and the wonderful staff.”
“We also discussed the Domestic Abuse Bill. I chaired the Joint Committee which scrutinised the draft Domestic Abuse Bill last year, and look forward to the Government reintroducing as soon as possible.”
