Basingstoke’s MP, Maria Miller, welcomed the Secretary of State for Transport, Rt Hon Mark Harper MP, to Basingstoke to underscore the importance of improving road safety for children.
Maria said, “It was great to welcome the Secretary of State to Basingstoke to highlight my campaign to reduce the speed limit on the A30 and install a pedestrian crossing. Children’s safety is paramount, and together these two important measures would dramatically increase road safety for children and residents alike.
“It’s fantastic to have the support of the Secretary of State on this vital issue, and I would like to encourage anyone that hasn’t done so already to sign my petition to Hampshire County Council.
The Secretary of State for Transport added, “Decisions about speed limits are rightly for local councils and they should take into account local views. That’s why I back Maria Miller’s campaign to encourage Hampshire County Council to listen to local residents in and around Hounsome Fields and parents who will be doing the school run, to ensure the speed limit and road layout is appropriate for the community it surrounds.”
