To mark the 16th and final day of the annual ‘16 days of activism against violence against women and girls’ campaign, local MP, Maria Miller, held a round table to discuss the actions being taken in Basingstoke to tackle domestic abuse.
Maria said: “I was pleased to meet up with representatives from the charity Stop Domestic Abuse, the Police, Police and Crime Commissioner, and two of Basingstoke’s largest Housing Associations, Sovereign and Vivid to discuss what steps they are taking to tackle Domestic Abuse and the support in place for victims.
“Domestic abuse can affect anyone and has a devastating impact on victims and their families. The Police recorded almost 1.5 million incidents of domestic abuse last year, and we know that the number of cases spikes significantly at Christmas time.
“We know how difficult it can be for victims to escape an abusive relationship, so it is vital that we inform people that sources of support are in place and available to those who are suffering.”
Anyone in immediate danger, or who knows someone who is, should call 999 and ask for the Police. In an emergency, if you are unable to speak, dialling 999 and then entering 55 will transfer your call to the relevant police force who will assist you without you having to talk.
